Casualty

Casualty

PARIS RE's casualty business accounts for 16% of our gross written premiums and includes treaty coverage for motor, general liability, workers compensation, and medical malpractice, as well as other professional liability lines. Our motto is: “we know what we write and we write what we know”. Our Senior Underwriters have average of 11 years of experience in writing Casualty; long enough to have weathered a few of the business cycles inherent within reinsurance. While we endeavor to provide as many solutions for our clients as possible, all casualty lines, including automobile liability, are underwritten on their own merit.

We have been writing casualty for over 30 years. We are committed to assisting our clients by providing quotations for treaty structures that make sense for both the buyer and the seller. We are committed to signing contracts at inception. We are committed to balanced, fair trading relationships.

Motor

PARIS RE reinsures both the third party liability and collision damage of motor vehicles. We offer various structures including quota shares with fixed or sliding commissions and excess of loss at various retention levels with fixed or swing rates. Motor treaties account for 55% of our overall casualty portfolio.

In the United States, we underwrite only quota-shares for non-standard personal passenger automobile risks. We cover direct insurers as well as business written through managing general agents provided only basic limits are offered to non-standard drivers. Our underwriters routinely perform client audits.

Outside of the US, we write both quota-shares and excess of loss treaties covering Motor on a stand-alone basis or in conjunction with general liability. We have recently grown our presence in the German motor market through the writing of a select number of large proportional treaties. We have extensive relationships in Canada, Asia, as well as the Middle East. For 2008, we plan to develop relationships in Latin America.

In addition, PARIS RE has developed a niche in the motor line of business as a retrocession provider for unlimited exposure on a non-proportional basis. This product generally has more appeal for European exposures where the primary coverage has a very long tail. We do not provide retrocessional reinsurance for any other line of casualty business.

We write motor business on a treaty basis throughout the globe and each of our regional offices are equipped to handle the servicing requirements of our current and prospective clients.

General Liability

We write general liability in Canada, Japan, and Europe. We plan to develop our relationships in this line of business in Latin America. We also offer multi-line treaty coverage to regional carriers in the United States whose insured base is primarily composed of small to medium sized commercial or farming risks.

Our underwriting guidelines regularly address new exposures and trends such as bio-diversity, genetically modified organisms, and nanotechnology. Our Senior Underwriters are prepared to assist our clients on contract wordings for specific coverage and exclusions.

Workers Compensation

PARIS RE only offers Workers compensation coverage on a non-proportional basis. We generally prefer catastrophic layers, in excess of any one life. However, we will consider working levels, within any one life, of a selective basis. We do not have any maximum net loss requirement for any one life. We assess the appropriateness of the MAOL on a case by case basis. We provide coverage on a “per occurrence” basis only; our limit of guarantee responds only once to any one event.

We offer this coverage in each of our regional offices, though our Paris office performs most of the underwriting. We can provide quotations with varying annual aggregate limits.

Medical Malpractice

PARIS RE's medical malpractice coverage includes professional liability for physicians and surgeons as well as hospitals. Our worldwide client base tends to be mutual insurance carriers, risk retention groups, joint power authorities, and trusts. Our largest client base is in the United States where we provide strong support for members of the PIAA. However, we also have stand-alone medical professional liability treaties with clients in France, Italy, and Australia.

Professional Liability

Our other professional liability lines include treaty coverage for lawyers, directors & officers, notaries, small accountants, and architects. In the United States, we are extremely selective in our underwriting of other professional liability lines.

PARIS RE writes casualty business in countries around the world, with an underwriting appetite that is specific to each region. Nevertheless, our portfolio tends to be made up of regional carriers whose risks are primarily small to medium sized businesses or farms. Our casualty underwriters have an average of over ten years' experience in both insurance and reinsurance. Underwriting authority for casualty business is centralized in Paris where most of the treaties are actually written. However, each regional office is responsible for the management of the treaty business covering cedants within their respective territorial responsibilities. Clients and brokers can access PARIS RE through any of our regional offices.
